I Want to Gift My Son Power!

i-want-to-give-my-son-power

I am the mother of a little boy who has been filling our lives with love, excitement and energy ever since he was born. I’ve all sorts of dreams for him. I want him to be professionally successful, socially adored, emotionally strong and physically attractive. I wish he stays ahead in every race that may happen on a racing track or in this fast- paced life. I wish that he becomes everyone’s favourite. I wish….
Well, my wishes for him do not and will not end. I may not have control over his fate or how his life would shape up but I can definitely take charge of his Today. Everyday, I try to be better so that I can teach him better. He teaches me motherhood, I teach him life and in this process I am learning to understand life better.

Being a mother is a delicate job. I have a life that I need to handle with care, probably with the same care, patience and tenderness that is needed to carry an infant in your arms for the first time. I may have crossed that level where I needed to physically take care of him more but my responsibilities towards him are only increasing with the increasing number of candles on his cake. This July he’s going to turn 5. I want to gift him ‘power.’

Busting the Superhero myth
Like other boys his age, he just loves superheroes because they have tremendous muscular power. But I want to tell him that this ‘superhero power’ is fake. For a moment I thought it won’t be fair to take away his fantasy world from him. But the next moment, this doubt faded away when I thought it’ll be all the more unfair to let him nurture a false understanding of the concepts of ‘hero’ or ‘power.’ I decided to tell him the difference between fantasy and reality.

“Mama, I’ll hit him like Superman does.”
The very same day, this is what happened. He came home from school complaining to me, “Today Monish hit me. It hurt so much. I’ll hit him tomorrow. He doesn’t know that I am Superman and I have the power to punch him hard.” I asked him, “Did you like it when Monish hit you? He said ‘no.’ I asked him “Do you think it’s good to hit or hurt someone?” My son said, “no.” I said, “Here you are. Hitting your friend back isn’t right. Monish did a bad deed by hitting you. Now if you hit him it’ll be worse because you know it’s bad to hit someone. You can always tell your teacher. She’ll take care of the matter.” I further told him “A real Superman is someone who uses his power to help people and not to hit anyone. Hitting is the business of a villain and I am sure you’re not one.” My son nodded and looked satisfied. I beamed with glory.

Transferring wrong principles
Today, we seem to have started believing that tit for tat is the way for survival. I am sure all of us must have heard people proudly telling their children “Peet ke aana, pit ke mat aana.” Obviously, till the time we have vengeance and violence as our principles, we cannot expect this world, our country, our state, the society we live to be a safe place for our kids. If we do this, on one hand we are encouraging our kids to indulge in fights and on the other hand we are prompting them not to bend or be polite. Its strange that we ourselves believe in violence but we wish this world to be a peaceful place for our kids.

Being truly ‘Powerful’
If we really want this world to be a safe, we must tell them what power is and where it actually lies. We must tell our kids that the real power lies in knowledge, kindness, truth, perseverance, noble intentions and a strong will. If they want to conquer the world they must win over hearts and not bodies.
