Abstract Memories of 80s Childhood

09th Jul 2016   By Priya Sundaram  [95 views]

I am an 80s born and there are a lot of things about a typical 80s childhood that I wish to share. This nostalgic compilation is at its abstract best and they are the most memorable pieces of my life.

Remember the Friday 8pm Chitrahaar, probably the only program airing the latest movie songs. At some point its position was taken over by “Superhit Muqaabla“, a Sunday night event, which all the 80s kids enjoyed. These days there are so many channels and too many movies that its hardly interesting to sit and spend time watching TV. Here are some of the best shows of 80s I loved to watch.

Weekends would mean – shampoo, uniform ironing, lots of playing outside and reading comics like –

Playing outside used to be so much fun, the games would range from hide and seek to kho-kho,to pittu, badminton to gallery and what not! These days kids are hardly exposed to outside play.

Very few cartoons were available for our eyes and some of them remained in our hearts! I personally like these two – These days – OMG, you name anything from bugs to Betal, from Bheem to Kisna – serious overdose!!

Cricket fascinated me and I learnt a lot about the game because of this one person. Every one of my friends had a crush on him and he was the only one to live in my room for a long time….. Rahul Dravid!

A trip to shop for dresses for any ocassion would mean strolling to the nearest marketplace. And now, it’s a drive to a big mall in a car or ola or uber 😛

Only a few houses had phone connection, that too only landline. Would you believe, I had my first phone conversation when I was in Class 12? And look around now, I don’t have to go too far, my house alone hosts – iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android phone and a landline..

Flying kites brought all the kids in the society together. August 15 – I have colorful memories of you apart from just being a holiday. If you had lived in Delhi in 80s, you could understand  words like -“ibo” and “dheel” . I guess I can show kites on a laptop to this generation!

The first movie that I saw in a theater holds a special place in my memory and the first cassette I owned needs a special mention. Do you feel the theaters hold the old charm?

After seeing this movie, every girl in the city had this frock :)

Every year, we would strive hard to get good marks, as the then famous ice cream parlor – “Nirulas” used to give their best ice-creams to the kids getting above 90%. I would be found there with my report card, gulping my big glass of ice cream. Will our kids work hard just for an ice cream??

Probably the only non homemade food I occasionally had at those times – now we ourselves eat a lot of junk and introduce the same in our child’s life way earlier.

Summer vacations would typically mean standing on a que at my school’s office room to get the concession form for booking tickets from Delhi to Chennai. The little fights over who will get the window seat or the upper berth, to the hope of making new friends was very eagerly awaited. Kids these days are put on a summer camp or travel by air. Travelling in a 2nd class with simple homemade food is beyond question and imagination.

My nostalgia trip often keeps me grounded and reminds me of the simple pleasures of those times. I truly wish, I can pass the legacy of the ability to enjoy simple things in life to my children. So that like me, when they sit back, they can remember and enjoy their childhood memories as much as I do!

I am stopping here as I want the readers to post at least one memory that’s close to their heart from their childhood!
